Effecting change through an innovative financial product

Effecting change through an innovative financial product

This case study assesses how a new agricultural loan product is helping smallholder farmers to access loans by using their land use right as a guarantee. The loan product, developed by LIFT in partnership with the Government of Ethiopia and microfinance institutions (MFIs), allows farmers to use their second level land certification as a form of collateral when applying for a loan. The case study analyses how successfully the new scheme is being adopted and adapted by MFIs, and what impact this is having on lending practices and smallholder farmers.
